Growing Into the Role We’re Given
A promotion or a change in role can fill us with pride. At the same time, it often brings a quiet question: Am I truly capable of carrying this responsibility?
A title may change overnight, but we ourselves do not transform into someone entirely new. When we notice the gap between what is expected of us and who we are today, we are forced to pause. That moment of awareness—the recognition of that “gap”—is where growth begins.
Facing a new role means refusing to look away from that gap. It takes courage to admit what we cannot yet do. Yet the choice we make at that point—to take a step forward and begin learning—can shape everything that follows. Opening a book. Listening carefully to someone with experience. These may seem like small actions. But through steady accumulation, they gradually widen our perspective, sharpen our judgment, and transform how we relate to others.
It is not the title that makes us grow. It is the attitude of striving to become worthy of the role. Continuing to learn is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign that we are willing to accept responsibility.
What role are you carrying today? And what kind of learning are you committing to in order to fulfill it more fully?
Work may not simply be about performing the duties attached to a title. Perhaps it is, above all, the ongoing practice of refining our mindset—and ourselves.
